History - WAYWARD LAD makes it three in the 1985 King George VI Chase

Wayward Lad makes history in the 1985 King George VI Chase, prevailing by a neck at odds of 12/1 to register an unprecedented third success in the great race for legendary trainer Michael Dickinson.

One of Dickinson's famous five to dominate the finish of the 1983 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Wayward Lad was subsequently a gallant runner-up to Dawn Run in that immortal 1986 renewal of the Cheltenham Festival highlight. But while he boasted excellent form at Cheltenham, the stamina demands and uphill finish at Prestbury Park was never truly his bag in comparison to the relative speed test at Kempton, where both the economy and speed of his jumping stood Wayward Lad in great stead.

After landing the King George in both 1982 and 1983, some relatively uninspiring form at the start of the 1985/86 campaign made him a fairly big price here but Wayward Lad was not be denied in what proved to be the fitting highlight in the twilight of a wonderful racing career.

Wayward Lad won once more - nearly 18 months later - in the Bowl at Aintree before a well-earned retirement at the age of 12.
