The outsider Mr Vadim ($21) began well from his inside barrier (1) and settled fourth on the rails. He eased across heels on turning for home, took the lead at the 200m and then fought on well to score by half length. Prost was second last in the 12-horse field before making ground along the rails to be eighth nearing the home turn. He got a split at the 200m and battled on well for second. Trustee Brown was near last to the turn and ran on late for third. Zester had a good run about sixth one off the rails before fanning wide on straightening. He challenged at the 200m then held on to take fourth. The favourite Kalahaar ($3) was third last to the 600m, was blocked on straightening and went back to last before switching wide at the 200m. He then came with a lateclosing run for fifth (beaten length and half) looking most unlucky. *ANZ
