The Lindsay Park-trained colt Mutamayel followed his debut win in a Maiden (1400m) at Pakenham on 8 August to score well here and remain unbeaten in two starts. He began well and soon crossed to the lead before easing to race in second spot. He got along the inner to challenge at the 300m and then after quite a battle, he got the upper hand to win well. Sheer Madness, a Flemington winner of Benchmark 70, 3YO (1400m) on 12 August, was last in the six-horse field early on before improving to lead (racing away from the rails) from the 800m. He was challenged on turning for home and then fought well in the straight for a good second.
