The Lindsay Park-trained filly River Jewel, who had shown promise with a fourth and a second at her first two starts, broke through for a very good win here. She showed good pace from her inside barrier (1) to lead and then travelled well in front before grabbing a break at the 300m. She then fought back gamely and went on to score quite comfortably at the post. It was a smart effort and she is a filly to watch. Godolphin-trained two-year-old gelding Watchdog raced in fourth place but was shuffled back nearing the home turn before getting along the rails from the 250m. He went to second at the 100m and then battled on quite well to hold that position, without troubling the winner.
