The well-supported Dark Dream followed recent placings at stakes level at Randwick and Doomben to score impressively, advancing here to 2000m. He showed good early pace from his outside barrier (15) and soon worked across to race just behind the leaders in third place. He moved up strongly (wide) to go to the front coming to the home turn and then drew away in the straight to score impressively by four lengths, looking on track for the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m) on 9 June. Higher Ground settled back in tenth place before improving (wide with cover) from the 600m. He looked dangerous when he went to second on straightening but he proved no threat to the winner before battling on soundly for second. California Turbo raced back in 11th place, improved (between runners) from the 600m, went to fifth at the 200m and kept running on nicely to take the minor placing, just in advance of Omineca who came from back in the field, after gaining a run through at the home turn to be fourth at the 200m, and then held that position to the post.
