35 for Camelot
Nerium scored in Carl Jaspers-Preis

The Peter Schiergen-trained Nerium (4 c ex Nicolaia by Alkalde) broke through at stakes level for the first time when he landed the Carl Jaspers-Preis (Gr 2, 2400m) at Cologne on Sunday and in the process handed former shuttler Camelot (Montjeu) with his 35th stakes winner. Last seen finishing fourth in the Grand Prix Aufgalopp (Listed, 2100m) the colt clearly appreciated the step up in trip to come home strongly to beat Kaspar (Pivotal) by two and a half lengths. Camelot shuttled to Australia for one season and his 35 stakes winners are headed by seven Group 1 winners including Australian elite level-winning duo Sir Dragonet and Russian Camelot, who will cover his first book of mares at Widden Stud in the spring at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

Second stakes victory for Al Aasy
Having taken out the Bahrain Trophy (Gr 3, 1m5f) at Newmarket last July, the William Haggas-trained Al Aasy (3 c Sea the Stars - Kitcara by Shamardal) got his four-year-old career off to the best possible start when he landed the John Porter Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Newbury on Sunday. Raced by Shadwell, the colt was purchased by the operation for 300,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2018 and he is out of the winning Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Kitcara, who is herself a half-sister to 2015 ATC Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) winner Kapour (Toylsome).

Ten for Maxios
Coolmore Stud-based sire Maxios (Monsun) chalked up his tenth stakes winner on Sunday as his Christophe Ferland-trained daughter Cirona (3 f ex Coco Demure by Titus Livius) landed the Prix De La Grotte (Gr 3, 1600m) at Longchamp. It was a much deserved stakes win for the three-year-old having been narrowly beaten into second in the Prix des Reservoirs (Gr 3, 1600m) last October, while she also finished second in the Grand Criterium du Languedoc (Listed, 1600m) in November. Maxios’ ten stakes winners include Group 1 winner Diamanta and Master Of Wine, who landed the Sky High Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last year.

Second Group 3 win for Policy Of Truth
Policy Of Truth (3 c Siyouni - Dawn To Dance by Selkirk) got the better of Group 1 winner Sealiway (Galiway) in the Prix De Fontainebleau (Gr 3, 1600m) on Sunday. The three-year-old colt landed the Prix des Chenes (Gr 3, 1600m) as a juvenile and signed off last season by running fourth in the Criterium International (Gr 1, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud on October 24. The colt is one of 44 stakes winners for Haras de Bonneval-based stallion Siyouni (Pivotal) and they include Australian Group 2 winner Aylmerton.

153 for Shamardal
Late Darley Stud stallion Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) sired his 153rd stakes winner on Sunday when Sublimis (5 g ex Be Fabulous by Samum) defeated last year’s German Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up In Swoop (Alderflug) in the Prix Lord Seymour (Listed, 2400m) at Longchamp. Sublimis is out of Group 1 winner Be Fabulous (Samum), making him a half-brother to Listed winner Lillian Russell (Dubawi). Be Fabulous herself is a fellow elite level winner to Baila Me. Shamardal’s progeny is headed by 26 Group 1 winners, including Pinatubo and Earthlight, who will cover their first books of mares at Darley Kelvinside and Northwood Park respectively this spring.
