A Choice Weekend

3 minute read

The Redoute's Choice filly Mama's Choice achieved a lot when she swooped home for an upset debut win in the Listed Chairman's Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday.

She maintained a fine run of racing success by her owner-breeder Jonathan Munz with the Redoute's Choice progeny, most notably for this season's G2 winner Rekindled Interest and Group-placed Rekindled Alliance.

Munz is also a co-owner of Lemieux, a 5YO son of Redoute's Choice who scored his fifth consecutive win from the Paul Messara stable at the Sunshine Coast.

Reared at Bellerive Stud, Mama's Choice is the 81st individual stakeswinner and the eighth ANZ stakeswinner this season for her champion sire.

Her performance bested her precocious dam Red Hot Mama, who won the Listed Ottawa Stakes at Flemington at her second start in 2004.

Red Hot Mama (General Nediym) is a half-sister to dual G1 winner Hollow Bullet and previously left the stakes-placed winner Red Hot Choice to Redoute's Choice.

She has a yearling full brother to Mama's Choice and Red Hot Choice, and a colt foal by High Chaparral, but sadly the mare herself died in January.

Mama's Choice has also strengthened her sire's hand in the G1 Blue Diamond, a race he made his own when he won the 1999 edition at his second start.

He has already produced two Blue Diamond winners, Undoubtedly (2005) and Nadeem (2006).

Mama's Choice joins another debut-winning daughter of Redoute's Choice in the Blue Diamond mix as he also has Magic Millions Classic runner-up No Looking Back.

Arrowfield sires have dominated the Blue Diamond in the past decade, with Flying Spur (sire of Sleek Chassis, 2007), Hussonet (Reaan, 2008) and Starcraft (Star Witness, 2010) extending the stud's honour roll to five winners from the past 10 runnings.

David Hayes also has high hopes for Niconoise, the 3YO son of Redoute's Choice who won over 1100m at Morphettville last Saturday.

Niconoise (Redoute's Choice x Nicola Lass by Scenic) will return to Melbourne and be set for the G1 Australian Guineas on March 3.

The beautifully bred colt is a homebred for Peter Devitt and the late Les Gordon and will become one of Australia's best stallion prospects with a Group 1 victory at Flemington.

Niconoise races in the same blue and pink striped silks as his older G1 winning half-brothers Nicconi and Niconero.

Together, they claimed 7 G1 events. Nicconi has served full books in his first two seasons at stud.

Redoute's Choice is enjoying a great run in the three year-old division this season. His recent winners include Arrowfield homebred New Wave at Scone and the Hawkes-trained filly Girl Gone Rockin at Ballarat taking to 40 the number of individual winners Redoute's Choice has sired from his Arrowfield crop conceived in 2008.

There have been 36 in Australia and another four in NZ.
