• GODOLPHIN colt Astern burst to prominence for the 2016 Golden Slipper Stakes with an impressive debut victory at Randwick on Saturday.
By Medaglia D’Oro, sire of this year’s Golden Slipper winner Vancouver, Astern won by two and a half lengths and impressed trainer John O’Shea.
“If we are going to win a big race, this is the colt to do it,” O’Shea said.Astern is a half-brother to Godolphin’s classy 3YO Modador out of the two-year-old winner Essaouira (Exceed And Excel), a daughter of Alizes (Rory’s Jester).
Alizes is a stakes winning daughter of G1 winner La Baraka (Euclase).Godolphin runners won three races at Randwick with victories by homebreds Medcaut (Commands) and Fitou (Street Cry).
• HOLY Roman Emperor mare Sheidel posted back to back stakes wins with her front running victory in the Listed WATC RS Crawford Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.Prepared by David Harrison, the 4YO Sheidel (Holy Roman Emperor x Laventour by Metal Storm) led throughout in the 1000m dash for her 10th win and two seconds from 14 starts with her prizemoney topping $584,000.
She is a half-sister to stakes-winner Latoria and is the best of three winners from Laventour, a half-sister by Metal Storm to G3 winner Track Jester.• HENRYTHENAVIGATOR sired his first Australian stakes winner when his 3YO gelding Lite’n In My Veins scored a debut win in the G3 WATC Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic at Ascot on Saturday.
It was a bold gamble by veteran trainer Freed Kersley and paid off when Lite’n In My Veins (Henrythenavigator x Beauty World, by Danehill Dancer) won the 1400m event at his first start by half a length under Hogn Kong champion rider Douglas Whyte.“It’s not easy for a first timer to win over 1400 metres let alone in Group 3 company and I’d be surprised in a year’s time if you don’t see him at Group I level,”said Whyte.
Lite’n in my Veins is the sixth winner from six foals to race from Beauty World, a winning Danehill Dancer half-sister to stakes-winner Firenza.He is a half-brother to G3 winner Hi World, stakes-winner Loveyamadly and G1 placed American Crew and is ninth stakes-winner worldwide for Henrythenavigator
• DUST Me Off (Trade Fair x Lust For Dust by Made Of Gold) became the tenth stakes winner for his sire Trade Fair with his win in the Listed Towtown Cup at Ascot.Trade Fair, an imported son of Zafonix, stands at Lynward Park Stud in WA.
• BARGAIN buy Slots became the 11th stakes winner for her sire Casino Prince with her first black type success in the Listed Just Now Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.The six-year-old mare, previously Group and Listed placed, is the fifth individual stakes winners this season by Casino Prince. His earlier stakes winners this season have been Mighty Lucky (Listed Festival Stakes), G3 Eclipse Stakes winner Casino Dancer, Hooked (G2 Tramway Hcp) and Escado (G3 JRA Cup).
Slots (Casino Prince x Serein by Snippets) powered home from midfield to defeat 2013 Magic Million Classic winner Real Surreal.A $1700 yearling purchase by Newcastle trainer Grant Marshall, Slots is a half-sister to the winners Giant Killer (Elusive Quality) and Irishkiwi (Red Ransom).
Their dam Serein won four races and was stakes placed in Adelaide. She is a three-quarter sister to Hong Kong G1 winner Mr Vitality and three-time Mornington Cup winner Gunnamatta.“She has been really great for us this year with placings in Group and Listed races,” Marshall said.
“We were really after a black-type win and that puts her on the charts as a broodmare.“She will stay here for the Goldmarket at the Gold Coast on Boxing Day and will have one more preparation before going to stud.”
• DON Eduardo’s Group winning son Swift Alliance sired his first winner at the Mudgee Cup meeting on Friday.The aptly named 3YO gelding First Alliance (Swift Alliance x Wonderer by End Sweep) was racing first-up for trainer David Vandyke after placings at Lismore, Scone and Bathurst last season.
His dam Wonderer was a Listed winner and had previously produced three winners.Swift Alliance (Don Eduardo) was trained by Gai Waterhouse for Gooree Park Stud to win the G3 races at Rosehill and Flemington before he started a stud career in 2011.
Eduardo Cojuangco transferred him to Grafton based Akaroa Thoroughbreds for three seasons before he returned to Gooree Park at Mudgee this year.Gooree Park Stud sold First Alliance’s dam Wonderer to Eliza Park International in 2013 and she has a yearling colt by Statue Of Liberty.
• MODESTY, a homebred daughter of I Am Invincible for well-known Sydney owner/breeder Don Storey, scored her first metropolitan success at Moonee Valley on Friday night.Now trained at Warrnambool by Daniel Bowman after starting her career in Sydney, Modesty was a first up winner at Warrnambool and has now won three of her six starts.
She is one of five winners from Octagonal mare Special Test, a full sister to the dam of Storey’s $1.5 million earner Rain Affair.• MAGIC Albert posted his 21st stakes winner when the Listed Secretariat Stakes at Turffontein went to his lightly raced Australian-bred three year-old Suyoof.
A $150,000 Sydney Easter Session II purchase from the Yarraman Park draft, Suyoof is trained by Mike de Kock for Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Estates and has now won two races in succession at Turffontein.Suyoof is a half-brother to Melbourne G3 winner Charmed Harmony from Magic Harmony. Suyoof is the 21st stakes-winner for Yarraman Park’s stalwart sire Magic Albert, who has seven entries for Magic Millions and 14 for Inglis Classic.
• CAMPBELL JUNIOR, an Australian-bred 3YO colt by Encosta De Lago from the G1 winner Melito (Redoute’s Choice), has recorded his third win from four starts in Japan.Purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $400,000 from the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he won at Nakayama with Ryan Moore as his rider.
