Group One Aim For Faatinah

3 minute read

The Lindsay Park stable is keen to get a Group One win on the board with the six-year-old gelding Faatinah after his classy first-up win in the G2 Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Co-trainer David Hayes said next month's G1 AJ Moir Stakes over the same 1000m course next month offered an ideal opportunity for Faatinah, a son of NIcconi bred and raced by Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Stud.

Faatinah (NIcconi x Alqwah by Danehill) finished sixth in last year’s Moir Stakes and Hayes believes his trip to Dubai last season has made him a better horse.

"I reckon he's a better horse than he was this time last year," Hayes said. “He's never worked better in his life going into this race.”

Faatinah has now won six of his 26 starts and has amassed career earnings $813,269 in Australia and Dubai where he recorded a win and a placing before finishing eighth in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in March.

His dam Alqwah has produced three other winners including the stakes placed Jalsah (Elusive Quality).

Alqwah’s dam Delage (Belypha) is a half-sister to the G2 Prix Maurice De Gheest winner and G1 placed sire College Chapel (Sharpo).

Faatinah is also related to the triple G1 winner King’s Chapel (King Of Kings), New Zealand’s Horse of the Year in 2004.

Lindsay Park-trained sprinter Faatinah returned after racing well in three starts in Dubai to score a smart first-up win here. He was quickly away and raced in the middle of a trio of leaders, going at a quick tempo, in the early stages. He eased in to be second at the 700m, moved up nearing the home turn, got to the front at the 100m and then fought back to score a very good win. The outsider Sunday Escape showed great early pace to contest the lead before going to a clear lead nearing the 600m. He then fought back very well for second, staging a really good effort here. Mr Sneaky settled back in ninth place, got between runners at the home turn and then ran on well for third in a good first-up effort. Quilista raced in back in seventh place, improved between runners to be a distant fourth on turning for home and then ran on well for (1.2 lengths) fourth in a nice first-up run. Hey Doc had a good trip in fourth place on the rails from barrier four. He was under riding back in third spot at the home turn and then held on under his top weight (60kg) for (2.45 lengths) fifth effort in a sound effort resuming here over this short trip.
