They managed to leave Western Australia last time with over $700,000 in prizemoney and in November they’re coming back for more, with Andy Gath confirming his plans to head back to the west with Catch A Wave for the WA Pacing Cup.
"We 100% want to be there, and if everything falls into place we will definitely be there, it just seems a great option for him to go back to that race." Andy Gath said
Catch A Wave returned back to the East Coast and Gath had every intention on keeping his preparation going, but he has since decided to give him a quick freshen up before he targets the impressive pacer towards the Len Smith Mile at Menangle in September, the Victoria Cup in October and then ultimately onto the WA Pacing Cup in November, with Gath confirming they will bypass the Inter Dominions.
The tight 800m circuit at Gloucester Park is usually a deterrent for the eastern raiders, but Gath confirmed he has his own 800m training track at home and made mention that Catch A Wave gets around that fine, but did say "until you race on it, you never know."
"We watch from afar here, it's very competitive, which is a great thing,
"it's exciting racing and we sort of new before we left that it would be a challenge to go, but we knew the racing style would suit my bloke, he's pretty good coming off speed and it all worked out well for us,
"It's one of the few tracks left in Metropolitan area too, which is good."
Handling the track and the travel well, it can be assumed that a second trip to WA will be a breeze for the five-year-old but dependant on flights into the state, Gath does hope he can race Catch A Wave the week before the WA Pacing Cup.
"That would be perfect if it fell that way, he's a horse that probably notoriously goes better if he races the week before a big race,
"It's going to be harder again with all the good four-year-olds in Perth that will probably step up and go in this race like Mister Smartee and others,
"We know it won't be easy, but we thought we probably won't tackle an Inter Dominion with him, so we thought this is probably a better option for him."
Catch A Wave made headlines in WA when he not only took out Australia's richest group 1 race, The $1.25million Nullarbor in April this year, but a week later went on to win the $300,000 Retravision Fremantle Cup.
"It was a wonderful experience being a part of The Nullarbor and The Trilogy over there, winning was just icing on the cake."
