Hong Kong Looking for Serial Winners

3 minute read

Both Wellington in the Sprint and Golden Sixty in the Mile are chasing a third successive win in their respective races.

And in the Cup it will be Romantic Warrior trying for second successive win.

All three are going to encounter worthy opponents and will find a win a tricky proposition.

In the Sprint Wellington will be up against Lucky Sweynesse who so far has responded to every challenge put to him and has won his last 4 starts.  He comes from gate 6 in the 8 horse race and it could be a tight finish.

Golden Sixty and main rival California Spangle lock horns again in the Mile but they have drawn gates 7 and 8 in the 9-horse field.  Trainer Tony Cruz has stated that he would like to see California Spangle go forward and there is a long straight down the back before the turn so time for everyone to sort themselves out.

In the QEII Cup Romantic Warrior is up against Dubai Honour who was in great form in Sydney and seems to thrive on travel.  The field has been reduced to 7 as Japanese entrant Hishi Iguazu became ill in quarantine in Japan and has not travelled to Hong Kong.  Nevertheless there are still 3 Japanese runners here – Danon the Kid, Prognosis and the mare with the dream pedigree Geraldina (Maurice-Gentildonna) who need to be taken seriously.

On the turf track this morning Dubai Honour looked a very happy horse, responding eagerly to everything track work rider Issy put to him.  "Aussie" Tom Marquand flies in tomorrow for the ride and will also be on the other UK raider Flaming Rib in the Sprint.
