Guineas weekend 2023

3 minute read

Unfortunately the rain came to Newmarket and somewhat spoiled the party despite it not being unknown in that part of the world.

Saturday started off with the Palace House G3 and this foretold of more upsets to come when Vadream on 7/1 won for Fellows – Shoemark and Live In The Dream ran second on 9/1 with Manaccan the best of the fancied runners in third.

Yes, Veronica there is a Santa Claus or at least Frankie Dettori thinks there is after he managed to stay on Chaldean and finish first in the 2000 Guineas!  This will probably be his last Guineas ride as he is supposed to be retiring at the end of the year.  Chaldean, trained by Andrew Balding, is a Frankel colt and the went out at 5/1.  Hi Royal 13/1 and Royal Scotsman 11/1 filled the second and third spots.  No luck for the Irish runners who had to put up with unusual travel and then the soft track – Auguste Rodin was hampered early on and did not seem to pick up from that maybe because of the going, and Little Big Bear was found to be lame in the Right Hind after the race.

On Sunday the rain had kept the track soft which was no problem for former Derby winner Adayer in the Gordon Richards as he won by 2 ½ lengths easing up with Anmaat second.

The Dahlia went to Via Sistina 10/3 by 6 lengths from Al Husn 8/1 and Astral Beau 17/1 with out selections running 4,5 and 6.  Oh well.

And the 1000 Guineas – a third winner over the weekend for Godolphin when Mawj, by Exceed and Excel, won on 9/1 for Saeed bin Suroor and Oisin Murphy.  She was in a great battle with Tahiyra down the straight and there wasn't much in it at the finish.  Third was a roughie in Matilda Picotte on 33/1 for Kieran Cotter and Ronan Whelan.  Meditate was 6th and again had unusual travel to cope with as well as the soft ground.
