Racing in rainy Japan this weekend

3 minute read

There's the Keio Hai Spring Cup on Saturday and the Victoria Mile on Sunday.

The first is a G2 in Tokyo, the second a G1 in Kyoto, with both venues likely to be impacted by the forecast rainy conditions.

Provided they handles the track, the picks for the Keio Hai Spring Cup are Danon Scorpion on 3.2 with Kawada riding, Red Mon Reve on 5.8 with K. Yokoyama on board (both horses by Lord Kanaloa), Avverare on 8.5 the mount of Christophe Lemaire, and Pixie Knight 9.0 with K. Tosaki riding.

Sunday's Victoria Mile is G1 and has brought out some quality female milers.  On paper it looks like being between Stars on Earth and Sodashi.  Stars on Earth is currently on 2.6 and is the ride of Lemaire.  She's finished in the top 3 in all her races and is aiming for her third G1.

Sodashi the white horse is everyone's sweetheart but she will need to be focused here if she wants to win.  Damian Lane has the ride and he should make sure that she does stay focused.  She won this race last year and is going for her 4th G1.

Namur is a very consistent miler and T Yokoyama has the ride with their quote being 5.6.

And Songline is also worthy of consideration as she won the Yasuda Kinen in 2022.  Tosaki rides and they are on 8.0.
