Liberty Island a very short-priced favourite in Japanese Oaks

3 minute read

After she won the Guineas so easily we wondered if she would take on the colts in the Derby.

However the winner of the 2000 Guineas was very impressive so connections decided to keep her with the girls and she looks like starting the shortest-priced runner in the last 40 years and may be ever – currently 1.4 in the Morning Line.  As usual this gorgeous daughter of our wonderful mare Yankee Rose (Dad is Duramente) will be ridden by Yuga Kawada.

The Yushun Himba (Oaks) is over 2400m which is something new for these fillies but Liberty Island has proved her versatility as far as the trip is concerned by winning the Flower Cup over 1800m, the Flora (Oaks Trial) 2000m and then back to 1600m for the Oka Sho (Guineas).

She has always looked to be a special talent so here's hoping she gets a chance to enhance that reputation on Sunday at Tokyo.

Other contenders (ignore the price – she is so short that these prices are huge) include Harper which is Christophe Lemaire's mount and is by Heart's Cry, Kona Court by Kitasan Black with Damien Lane riding and Golden Hind who is by Gold Ship who was silver (grey).

The weather looks good – may be a bit of drizzle but the sun is expected to emerge from behind the clouds and lead to a top of around 25.
