The real August Rodin wins Derby

3 minute read

Looking more like his sire Deep Impact every day, Auguste Rodin waited calmly until Ryan Moore said let's go.

And go he did, with that beautiful economic stride so praised by his trainer Aidan O'Brien, who was rewarded with his 9th Derby.

King of Steel ran a blinder at 66/1 to look like his winning 200m out but he then saw Auguste looming large and resigned himself to second.  White Birch ran a very honest race and did not have a lot of luck in the run to finish third on 12/1.  Happy to note that the jockeys of the second and third horses Kevin Stott and Col Keane were having their first rides in the Derby and both rode extremely well.

Auguste Rodin is from the last crop of Deep Impact and is the result of Coolmore sending some mares to Japan, which included Auguste's dam Rhododendron.  Sadly there will not be another.

On Friday the real Emily Upjohn turned up in the Coronation Cup and ran away with leaving Westover floundering in second and Point Lonsdale third.

The Oaks saw an upset before the start when our pick Running Lion kicked the back of the stalls and because she had slightly grazed a leg she was withdrawn, much to the disgust of jockey Oisin Murphy.  Returning to her home stable John Gosden said she was fine and they may now go to the French Oaks.  So Dettori got his second leg of the big race double with Soul Sister beating Savethelastdance and only a head away Caernarfon 40/1 – Jack Channon's Cityscape filly.

Also on Saturday we had the Diomed to start things moving and the Stoute-Moore combo came up with Regal Reality who defeated Highland Avenue and Koisai.

And then the Princess Elizabeth was a fitting farewell to Epsom for Dettori when he rode Prosperous Voyage to victory.
