Newmarket July surprises on Day 1

3 minute read

Tower of London didn't have any luck in the Bahrain Trophy.

Although it was a small field he got boxed in and blocked a couple of times as Ryan Moore tried to find a gap and when he did it was not sufficient to rein in Castle Way who got the verdict in a tight finish with Saint George not far off taking third.

In the July Stakes the beautifully turned-out favourite Purosangue had to lead and seemed a little lost out in front – his previous win was when he came from off the pace.  Maybe a case for blinkers.  So the win went to Jasour which resulted in a wonderful dance of jubilation from his Bahraini trainer Ali Majeed although Jasour is with Clive Cox while in England.  Jim Crowley was on board and that was the first of a big race double for him.  Lake Forest one of our tips ran a very good race in second and will stay in the little black book, and a roughie in Toca Madera (touch wood in Spanish) was the 40/1 third.  Malc had actually gone off favourite when the race started but was fairly ordinary in sixth.

The biggest upset came in the Princess of Wales's when Israr flew up the hill to defeat Adayar the short price favourite.  This was the second of Jim Crowley's double.

Friday's card has the Duchess of Cambridge G2 for the 2yo fillies over 1200m and as with the colts' race anything can happen.  The market has Godolphin's Kodiac filly Star of Mystery on 2/7 for Appleby-Buick – she's a course and distance winner which helps.  There are only four fillies running and Persian Dreamer is considered the main rival on 10/3.

The Falmouth Stakes are G1 over 1600m for the f&m and the big question here is will Via Sistina run?  The answer won't be known until much closer to starting time as she needs a bit of rain to make the track suitable for her.  Nashwa has been supplemented by the Gosdens and Hollie Doyle is 4/1 as is Remarquee for Becket-Hornby.
