Quickthorn wins the Goodwood Cup

3 minute read

In a "head to the front and keep going" ride Tom Marquand guided Quickthorn to a great win.

We had recommended Quickthorn but failed to do so in our piece as it was a choice between him and Broome for the roughie spot.  Quickthorn was always in the lead at some stage by about 25 lengths and stayed in front to finish 6 lengths ahead of the pack of four chasers with Emily Dickinson being the best of them and Coltrane third.

Earlier experience counted when Haarlem won his 6th start in the Vintage Stakes.  The promising Iberian was second and Mountain Bear 11/1 was third.

The Lennox Stakes only had 7 runners so it was a pretty easy task for the first two in the market to finish 1-2, namely Kinross for Gosdens-Dettori and Isaac Shelby for Meehan-Levey.

The weather gods are not looking friendly for Wednesday with rain, strong winds and thunderstorms predicted under a code yellow from the Met office.

However looking on the bright side of life we will have racing and pack the Marmalade Sandwiches as Paddington is coming to town.

Before that we have the Oak Tree G3 over 1400m presently with 16 runners headed by Fast Response – Burke-Lee – on 7/2.  Jumbly was scratched from a race over the weekend to run here and is on 4/1 for Joseph O'Brien and Ryan Moore, and Breege 11/2 for John Quinn and Jason Hart.  An interesting raider is Sicilian Defense, trained by Yves Barbarot and ridden by the talented up-and-coming jockey Alexis Pouchin.  As far as we know it is his first race in England so we wish him "bon chance".

The Molecomb is also G3 over 1000m for the 2yos with 8 starters.  Kylian has had four starts and won two of them – maybe another case where experience counts. Burke has booked Ryan Moore for the ride on the Invincible Spirit colt – they are on 9/4.

Big Evs won at Ascot in a Listed and is on 5/2, Baheer on 9/2 and we have a roughie here in Purosangue with the hopes that Oisin Murphy can get him to settle as he was a bit too headstrong last start which could account for the quote of 15/2.

And then Paddington will take the stage for the Sussex Stakes G1 for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore.  After Auguste Rodin's odd race in the King George connections are hoping that Paddington can continue his great run of G1s.  The most likely opposition comes from Inspiral 10/3 for Gosden-Dettori.  As there are only 6 runners for the 1600m contest it is not a betting race especially with Paddington on 4/9.  Watch from the side and have a nice beverage to go with the Marmalade Sandwiches!
