Galway Plate to Ash Tree Meadow

3 minute read

17yo Danny Gilligan, a local lad became the hero of Ballybrit after the Galway Plate.

He won on the Gordon Elliot trained Ash Tree Meadow who started at 13/2, defeating Authorised Art and stablemate Hollow Games with Wave of the Sea fourth in the 22 runner contest.  Kilcruit was disappointing – may have been the weight.

The main flat race was won by Last Ammo at 40/1.  The bookies were laughing as this followed a 66/1 winner in the first race.  One bookie said that nobody had backed the winner.  Mon Coeur was second at 8/1, Walking on Glass 22/1 and Takarengi fourth on 18/1.

The going was yielding and after Galway dodged the worst of the weather it may be good to yielding for Thursday's racing which features the other big ticket race – the Guiness Galway Hurdle.

We don't have a 40/1 or a 66/1 tip in this but we do have a 25/1 roughie in Cash Back – one of Willie Mulllins's runner and Kieran Callaghan will ride.  Those more prominent in the market are Zarak The Brave on 5/1, Filey Boy 6/1, Brazil ( who is also entered in another race) 8/1 and the same quote for Jesse Evans.  20 runners will line up for this Gr 3 contest.

The main flat race is the Fillies Stakes for f&m over 1400m with a field of 11.  On top is Dandy Alys 3/1, a Ralph Beckett raider with Colin Keane on board.  Honey Sweet is on 5/1 for Joseph O'Brien and Declan McDonoghue and we will be going for a c&d winner in Dermot Weld's Keep in Touch 5/1 with Chris Hayes riding.
