Goodwood's not so glorious ending

3 minute read

"Not with a bang but with a whimper" as T S Eliot wrote but fortunately this wasn't the world ending.

The weather gods were not so kind to Goodwood and after Thursday's soaking the rain was back for Saturday and after watching the first race it looked as if it would be impossible to continue but they soldiered on until after the Stewards' Cup after which they called stumps and we are betting that some of the jockeys in that race would have liked the call to have come before rather than after.

So the horses slogged it out in the Lillie Langtry with Sumo Sam 25/1 getting another clever front running ride from Tom Marquand to win from River of Starts and Time Lock.  Free Wind was never happy and finished out of the frame.

The Stewards' Cup saw Aberama Gold 18/1 win for David O'Meara and Andrea Atzeni, who seems to be collecting winning horses after deciding to go to Hong Kong.  Apollo One was second, Bielsa third and Mr Wagyu fourth.
