Travers Stakes Day at Saratoga

3 minute read

While this is not quite the end of the season there are 5 Gr1 races on the card.

First off is the Forego over 1400m but with only 5 runners so our lucky pin landed on Gunite 11/8 for Steve Asmussen and Ty Gaffalione.

That's followed by the Allen Jerkins Memorial also over 1400m for the 3yos and that goes one better with 6 starters.  Bob Baffert's Arabian Lion was at one stage destined for the Kentucky Derby but the trainer isn't able to race horses there so he's making up for lost time here on 7/4 with John Velazquez riding.

The Ballerina is also over 1400m for the f&m  with 8 runners.  Asmussen's Echo Zulu is top pick here on 5/4 with Florent Geroux on board.  Good Night Olive is also useful and comes in on 9/4n for Chad Brown and I Ortiz and Matareya is 11/2  for Brad Cox and Flavian Prat.

The Sword Dancer sees a switch to the turf track with Stone Age top of the 7 runners on 7/4 and the O'Brien Bolshoi Ballet 9/4 with John Velazquez riding.

And then the Travers – it's for 3yo and over 2000m and has the winners of most of the top 3yo races here.  Forte is 2/1 for Pletcher – I Ortiz.  Mage is 5/2 with a new partner in Flavian Prat, and Arcangelo will be ridden by Mage's former jockey Javier Castellano and they are on 3/1 with the proud trainer of the Belmont winner being Jena Antonnuci.
