Tenno Sho Autumn 2023

3 minute read

There are two Tenno Shos in Japan - In Spring it's over 3000m and Autumn 2000m.

Sunday's version of the G1 is run at Tokyo and sees the return to the track of the world's highest ranked horse, Equinox.

Equinox is going for his 5th consecutive G1 and also the very rare feat of winning this race in two successive years – only two others have done this.  He will be partnered as usual by Christophe Lemaire and of course he's virtually unbackable on 1.5.

Second in the Morning Line is Do Deuce on 3.2.  He won the Derby in 2022 but since then had had a difficult path to follow as he went to France and was not suited by the going in the Arc and it has taken a while for him to recover.  For us the odds are a bit skinny and we will look wider for quinella possibilities.

These will include Prognosis whom Kawada will ride.  They are on 13.3 and he has done his best racing over this trip.  Danon Beluga was 3rd in this race last year and since then was 2nd in the Dubai Turf,  Moreira's booking is a plus and they are on 15.1.  And our roughie is Gaia Force (by Equinox's sire Kitasan Black) on 47.1.  He seems an obliging horse doing everything that's been asked of him.

Saturday it's the Swan Stakes in Kyoto G2 over 1600m and very open.  The Morning Line has Avverare on top on 5.1 with Kawada riding and Lugal 6.1 with Take on board on 6.1 - both are by Duramente.  Grenadier Guards is by Frankel and on 6.5 with Mirai Iwata riding – he's just outgunned his father by riding his 400th winner at the age of 23!  Toshin Macau is on 8.6 and we will find a place for Es Cetera with Moreira riding and 10.8 the quote.
