Breeders' Cup 2023 Day 2 Saturday

3 minute read

With 2 Grade 2 and 9 Grade 1 races there's a lot to go through.

Starting off with the 2 Gr2 races the first of which is the Alliance Stakes over 2600m with 6 runners and here Godolphin (Appleby-Buick) should be adding to the trophy cabinet with Siskany who is on 8/5.  Next best probably Mandella's Salesman 5/2.

The Twilight Derby is over 1800m on the turf and here Webslinger comes in at 3/1 ahead of Godolphin (Appleby Buick) with Silver Knot on 5/1, Saddler's Panic Alarm with Dettori riding on 6/1 and Seal Team – Mandella-Rispoli also on that quote.

Then the Gr 1s start first off being the Dirt Mile which has 7 runners and here everyone will be with Cody's Wish after his remarkable career as he will be one of several having their last race here.  We wish Cody the horse and Cody the boy all the best.  Practical Moves was in this but unfortunately he collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack at track work earlier in the week so we will add Charge It – Pletcher-John Velazquez.

The f&m turf sees an interesting international clash here with UK's Inspiral on 5/2 for Gosdens -Dettori going up in trip and Ireland's Warm Heart (O'Brien-Moore) on 3/1 going down in trip.  We are going for a "roughie" here (according to the US markets) in Japan's Win Marilyn 20/1 or 16/1 in the UK – who won the Hong Kong Vase last year and while the races since then haven't been brilliant this is a very tough competitor.  And Argentina's Didia on 8/1 should be in the multiples at least. 12 runners and 2000m.

The F&M Sprint is over 1400m and has 9 runners headed by Goodnight Olive (Brown- Irad Ortiz who starts a suspension on Sunday) on 6/5.  Society is on 5/2 and another Japanese runner Meiki Yell is not the worst on 15/1 and this is a change of surface as well.

The BC Mile has 14 runners and here the field is led by a Japanese runner in Songline on 5/2 with other Europeans heading the market in Master Of The Seas (O'Brien-Moore) 7/1 but has a tough draw, Godolphin (bin Suroor-Oisin Murphy) has Mawj here who is in good form having won the QE2 at Keeneland recently and 4/1 is possibly generous also she's by Exceed and Excel so a bit of Aussie influence.  France is represented by Carlos Laffon-Parias with Karlina 6/1 and Guyon riding.

The Distaff is over 1800m and has 11 runners with Idiomatic 5/2 (Cox-Geroux) leading the market just ahead of Baffert's Adara Manor and Asmussen's Clairiere whom we like a lot.

The BC Turf is over 2400m with 12 runners and here another horse having his last race in Mostahdaf ls top of the market on 3/1 along with August Rodin (O'Brien-Moore) who has received good reports from the track watchers and he's by our beloved Deep Impact.  King of Steel is on 4/1 for Varian-Dettori and do not forget the Japanese – this time Shahrya who was second in last year's Japan Cup and ticks a few boxes on 15/1.

The Classic is over 2000m with 12 runners.  Baffert's Arabian Knight is on 3/1 while this year's Dubai World Cup winner – yes, another Japanese runner – Ushba Tesoro is on 4/1.  He doesn't get such a high profile as he is a dirt specialist and they don't have many good races on dirt in Japan and his biggest rival could be compatriot Derma Sotogake on 20/1.  Christophe Lemaire is going over to ride and he also had a big win at Meydan winning the UAE Derby and he's on 20/1.  White Abarrio is on 4/1.

The Turf Sprint over 1000m has 11 runners and Adam West and Sean Kirrane are the powers behind Live In The Dream who is on 9/2.  Caraval is 5/1 for Cox-Gaffalone with Motorious also on that quote although some of the figures may change after the withdrawal of Bradsell.  Aesop's Fables could come into contention on 12/1 for O'Brien-Moore.

The BC Sprint is over 1200m with 9 runners and the Morning Line has Elite Power on 9/5 (he's looked good at trackwork) and Speed Boat Beach on 3/1 with Gunite at 4/1 possibly the one to go to.
