Although not as important as the Chinese New Year the date of1/1 is generally celebrated in Hong Kong.

It follows their spectacular fireworks the evening before, and has as its main feature on the card Race 7, the Chinese Club Challenge Cup,a grade 3 race over 1400m with eight runners.

California Spangles is the highest rated horse in the race by a long way. Ignore his last run – he's had a well-earned break since then and according to trainer Tony Cruz and jockey Hugh Bowman is ready to show his best form. He will probably lead but Bowman should be able to rate him.  They are on 2.4.

Taj Dragon has already won over this c&d four times so he may be trying for naming rights.  Pierre Ng is having a great run at present and Andrea Atzeni is booked for the ride.  They are on 4.5.  Red Lion is a name we like as we have fond if somewhat hazy memories of an establishment of the same name.  Karis Teetan is riding for John Size and they are on 4.9.

We hope all the birthday boys will get an extra ration of carrots tonight to celebrate their big day!
