Macau to cease racing

3 minute read

The Macau Government and the Macau Jockey Club have agreed that racing will end on April 1, 2024.

That isn't much notice given that those entities have been discussing this since the middle of last year and while there was no transparency the stopping of horse shipments in June 2024 must have been a strong warning sign.

At least Singapore gave everyone a years notice.  This isn't even three months.  There are some 200m horses and some 600 humans who are directly involved with racing in Macau plus the owners of these horses who will need to know what arrangements will be in place to compensate them.

Stanley Ho led a consortium which purchased the MJC in 1991 and following his death in 2020 things seem to have gone downhill rapidly.  Certainly over the last few years the Club was losing money fast and changes needed to be made.  But the total closure of racing was not expected to some so soon.

One imagines it may be a great site for another casino.
