Scarf Wraps Up Winter Stakes

3 minute read

The Peter Snowden trained Scarf atoned for a miss last start when taking out the feature $100,000 Listed Myer Winter Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday in a tidy display assisted by a good ride by Kerrin McEvoy.

Scarf had won two in succession before a run last start over 1350m at Rosehill where the instructions were to ride the horse back in the field which then developed into racing room problems and the mission failed.

On Saturday Snowden said the plan was to ride Scarf forward this time and McEvoy did just that sending Scarf (53kg) out from barrier eight to settle in second 2L behind the leader Sniper's Bullet.

McEvoy closed the gap as they approached the turn and on straightening he was line abreast with Sniper's Bullet who soon folded.

Scarf, a flashy grey, was out in front a long way from the line but the progressive Lonhro three-year-old gelding was up to the task. He went all the way to the line holding at bay a charge by Devil's Arcade with the margin a long head.

Madibagold finished third, the margin 2L with Break Card fourth. The time was 1.29.74 on the Dead 5 track with the final 600m in 35.47. Scarf paid $3.30 on NSW TAB as favourite from the time markets opened on Wednesday with one TAB Sportsbet early wager securing $2500 @ $3.90.

“It worked out well today as I was up handy. He has a bit of a rest during the run and he had a good kick,” said McEvoy.

“He is an improving up and coming four-year-old. He has a good record now with six wins from 11 races.

“He is still learning because he want to lay in and it is a little bit ignoring as when you go for him he has that good kick for you but he grinds a bit after that and I reckon hanging in just costs him a little. I would like to see him get rid of that because if he is bottled up in a field he could find it awkward if he was hanging in and carrying on, whereas today he had the running rail and it was smooth sailing from there,” he said.

Snowden, who has recently returned from a trip to the UK commented there were not too many greys by Lonhro, but that the family were dominant greys, so Scarf has inherited qualities from both sides of his family.

“He took all the bad luck out of the race. He put himself on the speed and travelled well and gave a good kick on the corner,” he said.

“It is a good sign for me with a three-year-old winning at this time of the year against those sort of horses which says that you are going to meet them (better horses) somewhere in the middle next time through. He has done a great job,” he added.

Snowden said he would prepare Scarf for the $100,000 Winter Championship (1500m) at Rosehill on July 30th. He was not sure Scarf was a carnival quality horse just yet, but there was potential.

Scarf is out of the Quest For Fame mare Muffle and after his six wins and one second he has earned stakes of $308,450.
