Stakes Company Next For Caprossa

3 minute read

Canberra based trainer Paul Jones will now look to earn some valuable black type success with Caprossa following her impressive victory last weekend.

Successful in continuing her affinity with the Warwick Farm circuit the daughter of Commands proved too strong for her rivals when racing up on the speed.

"The initial instructions were to sit just of the lead but Adam [Hieronymus] took the initiative to roll forward on her when the pace slackened," Jones said.

"She came home in 33.60 so it was always going to be hard to run her down in the short straight."

In what was her seventh victory from 15 career starts Jones said he will now look to target stakes company with his five-year-old.

"At the moment we are still tossing up our options with her," Jones said.

"We could keep her in Sydney and continue to make the rise through the grades and then target a race like the Triscay Stakes.

"Our other option is to head to Brisbane next weekend for the Listed Nudgee Handicap for fillies and mares, we'll nominate her for that event and just see what the depth of the race is like."

Unable to adopt her usual tactics of racing up on the speed from the wide draw when resuming, Jones felt Caprossa's performance had plenty of merit and was confident leading into Saturday's affair.

"We had left a fair bit of improvement in her and were very happy with her first up effort," Jones said.

"She made up close to five lengths on the winner [Calming Influence] on that occasion on a track which clearly favoured the leaders.

"So I was quite happy with her heading into the race."

Confident she will continue improve further throughout this preparation, Jones said a race like the Listed National Sprint [1400m] in March is still very much on their radar.

"It's definitely an option for her, if she's up and running and in good form she'll be heading that way, Jones said.

While yet to be proven beyond six furlongs , Jones is confident she will handle the step up in trip and is not simply one dimensional.

"We think she's not just explosive, she's a good chaser, she doesn't pull and if able to settle nicely in-running then I'd like to think she can run the 1400m," Jones said.

"She wasn't at her best last preparation so I don't want to hang my hat and say she can't do it.

"She is very similar to Onthelookout and how he raced, she's just as good a track worker as him and he also took a while to get to 1400m and I'm sure with a bit more maturity she will get there."
