Tick Tock Lady has scored a debut win at Sandown.
Grahame Begg was absent at Sandown to see the debut win of Tick Tock Lady but had a valid excuse.
Begg was in Sydney on Wednesday to celebrate the 92nd birthday of his father Neville, one of Sydney's former great trainers.
Neville Begg had an illustrious career in racing and prepared many class gallopers including Divide And Rule and Emancipation before at the age of 60 packing up and heading to Hong Kong.
After six years he returned home to Sydney and while no longer involved in training, he still has an active role in the breeding side and ownership.
One of his more recent big race victories came with Written By in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield in 2018.
Jordan Childs, who partnered Written By in the Blue Diamond success, was aboard Tick Tock Lady in the Ladbroke It! Plate (1300m) on Wednesday.
Sent out a $3.70 equal favourite, Tick Tock Lady scored a three-quarter length win from Red Fox ($3.80) with the other $3.70 equal favourite Devoted Poet a further 1-¾ lengths away third.
"Happy birthday to Neville and I hope they've all got a smile on their face after that win," Childs said.
Tick Tock Lady got a run up on the fence in overpowering the leader Red Fox late in the race and Childs believes there is plenty of improvement to come from the four-year-old mare.
"She'll learn a lot," Childs said.
"She wanted to over-race for a couple of strides, but once she came back, she relaxed beautifully.
"I had to go up on the inside and once she hit the front, she didn't know how to put the race away, but then in the last 50 metres she really stuck her head out.
"I think she's a horse with a lot of improvement and is definitely on the right track."
