Australian Turf Club has received a surge in first acceptances for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds – the iconic $3.5 million Group 1 Tooheys New Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens – with first entries up more than 15% on last year’s total.

Sydney’s signature race will be the centrepiece of a new-look Golden Slipper Carnival during March next year and will be one of five Group One races on Tooheys New Golden Slipper Day – including the George Ryder Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, Ranvet Stakes and The Galaxy.

A total of 1236 two-year-olds have been paid up for by stables and syndicates across Australia and New Zealand for the 2015 Tooheys New Golden Slipper – an increase of 16.16% and 172 nominations from the 1064 horses first nominated for this year’s race. There are 609 colts and 627 fillies.

Among the leading stables with the highest number of first acceptances when entries closed yesterday were Gai Waterhouse with 89, Darley Australia (78), Chris Waller (42) along with Star Thoroughbreds (21), Gerald Ryan (56), David Hayes (48), John and Team Hawkes (46), Peter and Paul Snowden (45), Mick Price (44), Gooree Park Stud (34) and Peter Moody (32).

Among the leading number of sires represented include Fastnet Rock (75), More Than Ready (57), Exceed And Excel (52), Snitzel (51), Sebring (50) and Lonhro (42). Across Australia, entries originated from NSW, a total of 691, followed by Victoria (309), Queensland (184), South Australia (34) and Western Australia (3).

Payment of the first entry fee of $550 for the Tooheys New Golden Slipper also automatically enters horses for the $1 million De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose to be run in September 2015.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing, Matt Rudolph, said the timing of next year’s $3.5 million Tooheys New Golden Slipper – to be run on Saturday, 21 March 2015 – had made the coveted Sydney two-year-old triple crown even more inviting for owners and trainers.

The staging of the Tooheys New Golden Slipper two weeks before The Championships at Royal Randwick has allowed a fortnight break to the $1 million Group 1 Sires' Produce Stakes and a further fortnight to the $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes.

“This big increase in first nominations emphatically highlights once again that it is every owner’s and trainer’s dream to win the greatest two-year-old race in the world," Mr Rudolph said. “Next year’s race will be part of a day of five Group One races and will again elevate Tooheys New Golden Slipper Day to arguably the greatest day of racing on the Australian calendar.

“No other race shapes the breeding industry like the Tooheys New Golden Slipper and with such a large number of entries that will again be the case, especially if a colt wins."

A second acceptance fee of $1000 (inc GST) for the 2015 Tooheys New Golden Slipper is to be paid before 3pm on Tuesday, 3 February 2015. Late entries of two-year-olds not qualified under the race conditions may still be received up to 11am on the Monday prior to the race, on payment of a “late entry” fee of $150,000 inc GST.
