Racing Victoria stewards on Friday afternoon announced via Twitter that the son of Elusive City had been “scratched on veterinary advice related to an ongoing teeth issue”.

He was a $26 chance for the signature event on the opening day of the Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup carnival.

It completes a forgettable trip to Melbourne for the three-year-old Group 1 winner and his young trainer Johno Benner.

Our Vespa was one of the hard-luck stories of the Group 3 BECK Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on 28 September in which he finished sixth behind Rich Enuff, when severely hampered on more than one occasion in the straight.

His scratching leaves a field of 13 for the $1 million Group 1, for which Rich Enuff is the dominant $2.20 favourite.
