Queensland Racing Launches Recruitment Drive

3 minute read

Students will have the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of Queensland’s up and coming jockeys and harness drivers at Brisbane’s Career and Employment Expo this week.

Racing College Queensland is embarking on a recruitment drive to bolster its ranks and nurture a pool of young, talented racing industry participants from jockeys and harness drivers to trainers and stable hands.

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon says the future of the racing industry depends on the next generation and strongly encourages anyone interested in a career in racing to visit RQ’s stand at this week’s career expo at South Brisbane.

“You don’t have to be born and bred within the racing industry to become a part of it. The main criteria we look for in potential candidates are people with a genuine interest and passion for the sport,” Mr Condon said.

“A career in racing can also offer opportunities to travel extensively. Racing is an international industry with employment worldwide. Visiting Racing College Queensland during the expo could be the start of an exciting, challenging and interesting new career.”

At the Careers Expo a panel discussion will be held with several apprentice jockeys and experienced harness drivers, including Brittany Graham and Amy Rees who have both travelled extensively with their racing careers.

Training manager Gabrielle Passlow says the organisation provides ongoing industry-standard training and mentoring to apprentice and working jockeys, stable hands, trackwork riders and strappers.

“Racing College Queensland is one of Australia’s leading racing training providers and offers nationally recognised qualifications. If you are 15 years of age or over and want a stimulating career then come and see us during the Brisbane Careers and Employment Expo,” Ms Passlow said.

“No previous horse experience is necessary. You just need to have a passion for animals and a strong work ethic.

“It’s an exciting time to become part of Queensland’s racing industry. Racing is moving into a more modern landscape with emerging technology and improved education options to ensure the industry remains at the top of its field.”

The Brisbane Careers and Employment Expo begins on with the RQ panel discussion at 10am.
