New pavilion adds to Gawler Cup festivities

3 minute read

Racegoers at this year’s Schweppes Gawler Cup can take in the action from the new Wolf Blass Pavilion, which will open for the first time at the region’s premier raceday.

The pavilion will provide attendees with a new vantage point for the Cup, held on Sunday, September 27. The Cooper’s Keg Roll is another new addition to this year’s event and will see teams of four compete in a relay down the home straight to win $500 worth of the famed company’s beer.

It’s a race that’s sure to produce laughs and cheers in equal measure.

Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club Chief Executive Stephen Smedley said an animal nursery will also be on hand for youngsters, further enhancing the event’s family-friendly appeal.

“We’ll have pony rides, face painting and a visit from Archie the Stable Stars mascot, as well as the fashion and top-notch racing, there really is something for everyone,” Mr Smedley said.

“The Gawler and Barossa community really gets behind us and we get a strong contingent of Adelaide residents travelling here because they know what a great day out it is,” Mr Smedley said.

Trains will travel from the city to the racecourse every 30 minutes, making the journey hassle-free.

Channel Seven weather presenter and Fashion at The Races ambassador Amelia Mulcahy will host the Gawler leg of the statewide Fashion at The Races competition. The best dressed female will go in the running to take home a luxury trip to Asia worth more than $20,000.

Mr Smedley said the track was in ‘tip-top’ order and expects strong competition for the $50,000 Schweppes Gawler Cup.

Celebrations officially start on Friday, September 25, with the Schweppes Gawler Cup luncheon at the racecourse.

Veteran racecaller Ray Fewings will interview champion jockey Clare Lindop and celebrated trainer Phillip Stokes, while memorabilia including a set of Pharlap colours and a photographic tribute to Bart Cummings’ Melbourne Cup winners will be auctioned. The popular annual Cup Calcutta will follow the lunch.

General admission tickets for the Cup on Sunday are $12, concession $8 and children aged under 15 receive free entry. Marquee packages have proved popular, but are still available for those wanting to add a touch of luxury to their day.
