MVRC Launches Jockey Challenge

3 minute read

The Moonee Valley Racing Club will introduce the Catanach's Brent Thomson Jockey Challenge to the 2018 Ladbrokes Cox Plate Carnival at Moonee Valley.

The MVRC is delighted it can recognise past champion jockey Brent Thomson by naming the Catanach’s Jockey Challenge in his honour.

Brent “The Babe” Thomson won four Cox Plates in five years with Fury's Order in 1975, Family Of Man in 1977, So Called in 1978 and Dulcify in 1979.

The MVRC will run 18 races across the 2018 carnival with eight races on Manikato Stakes Night (October 26) and 10 races on WS Cox Plate Day (October 27).

Each race will have six points on offer, with the winning jockey accumulating three points, the second placed jockey accumulating two points and the third placed jockey accumulating one point.

In the event of a dead heat, the points will be evenly split.

The jockey which accumulates the most points across the Cox Plate carnival will be deemed the winner and will win a $10,000 Catanach’s voucher and a silver-plated whip valued at $2000.

In the event of a tie, the winner is the jockey who has ridden the most winners.

If the jockeys still cannot be split, then the winner is the jockey who has ridden the most second placed horses. If the jockeys still cannot be split, then the equal winners will split the voucher value and another trophy will be awarded.

In the event that not all 18 races are conducted on the dates as listed, the jockey that has accumulated the most points of the races that have been officially completed will be deemed the winner as long as a minimum of five races have been completed.

The same “tie” conditions apply. In the event that less than five races have been completed, the challenge will be cancelled and no prizes will be awarded.
