Canberra Racing Preview – Friday 12 January 2024

3 minute read

The Rail is out 3m the Entire and they are likely to race on a Slow 5-6. It's a tidy card with some good betting races.

Race 1 1600m CL3

Maher-Eustace-trained FLIC EN FLAC (3) just missed at Nowra this trip and got even closer here two weeks ago heavily bet over a middle distance. Peaks now and Beasley is a key jockey booking. Better suited at the mile and she gets the nod. AUTUNNO (4) is a clear danger. Demolished a CL1 field here on the same day by 4L over this trip as a short-price favourite spiking his figures again. He will race also forward and is sure to give a sight. BADDA BOOM BABY (2) had a genuine excuse at Beaumont- Newcastle first-up. She has plenty up her sleeve and needs this journey, and longer. ZABELLSARERINGING (5) didn't have the best of it in the AUTUNNO race but missed a whisker the two prior. Fully fit and deserving of consideration.

Race 2 1400m BM65

GOOD LIEUTENANT (3) brings strong provincial and city form and put the pen through the latest at Randwick when he was wide throughout and outgraded. Beasley sticking aboard is a positive and the Sydney-trained gelding is well-placed to be winning over the longer sprint. SIR MING (4) will be better for the two solid efforts in Highways at Randwick and tackles 1400m for the first time. Beasley gets off but he draws for a soft run and fitter should be right in the finish. OVERICE (5) wasn't beaten too far when resuming at Beaumont-Newcastle after a slow start. She's a second-up winner with plenty to give and must be kept onside. ALMOST PERSUADED (1) was plain at Wagga (R) over the mile (vet cleared). Had threatened twice this trip prior and a 2kg claimer goes on. She will race forward and is better suited.

Race 3 1400m MDN

FLYING IMPALA (1) resumed here with a near miss behind Exceedingly Hot. Had come off a 287-day break and is sure to be further improved. Keeps Bensley and has the early speed to clear the awkward barrier. Clearly the one to beat. SOHO SUSHI (9) is also Goulburn-trained and was beaten 2.2L in the same contest. Sat handy but lacked a knockout punch. Will lead or box-seat from an inside barrier and can get into the finish. CABLE EXPRESS (2) debuts and is also down from Goulburn. Was a sharp trial winner here two weeks ago and JVO sticks from that. Draws low and a bold run is likely.  Wary. Tougher sorting the rest. DANISH LANE (7) second-up may be the best of them.

Race 4 1200m MDN SW

PICASSO'S DREAM (13) peaks and rates well off the Queanbeyan near-miss. Nesbit goes on and is striking at 30% with the Baker stable. The filly gets the nod in a competitive race. DOMAIN GARDENS (9) is first-up and brings a solid Randwick trial. Will be naturally improved and showed enough in her initial preparation to suggest she will be very competitive. MEDIA FRENZY (11) was narrowly beaten here first-up and held that figure at Wyong. Fitter again and she can also make the finish. MEGHAN (6) keeps Beasley off the placing here two weeks ago. She has more to give and should secure the run of the race. TONIX (4) is in a top metro barn and quick improvement is likely. Had been well trialled and didn't finish it off at Gosford on debut. Keenan goes aboard and is building a nice record with the stable. The betting moves will tell plenty.

Race 5 1300m Open – Federal

A good contest. TAP 'N' RUN (1) was an easy Open winner on the Wagga Riverside and then found CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2.3L too good here at this level. Meets that galloper slightly better at the weights and tipping he can bounce back with Cahill sticking in the saddle. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (3) impressed winning that contest picking up impressively in the straight. Peaks now and keeps the 1.5kg claim. The hat trick is within his reach. KING GUTHO (5) has been good both starts this preparation. Ran his best figure this track/trip so the extra meters shouldn't bother. Has the rail and is in the mix. INCENTIVE (2) rates well but the query is his capacity to run out a strong 1200m. Will lead or box seat and it's hard to question Canberra's premier barn. ROMAN HANDS (6) resumes for the Seib yard and is a former Irish galloper with plenty of ability. May need it but keep very safe all the same.

Race 6 2000m CL1 SW

Maher-Eustace-trained CHEVAL SAVANT (1) disappointed at Warwick Farm on a heavy track but had been building nicely prior. Will find this company much more to his liking and has the blinkers applied for the first time. Owen is a positive jockey booking and will position him forward. Gets his chance to return to the winner's stall. PREFER THE WINK (8) missed a whisker second-up over a mile in a Nowra Maiden (heavy). Ran his best race over 1850m at Newcastle and that would see him very competitive. LA SAGRADA (5) won his Maiden by 4.6L at Beaumont-Newcastle leading all the way. Will likely employ the same tactics again and can give a sight. BURGUNDY BUBBLES (12) steps up from the mile for the first time and is in the mix.

Race 7 1300m CL1

DARK VADOR (2) followed the comfortable Maiden win with an unlucky near miss here this trip as a $2.50 favourite. Should be fully fit now and can make amends. OUTSMARTED (5) won a Rosehill trial and then delivered the Maiden win at Bathurst. That stacks up and he's sure to have come on. Has a handy gate and Lerena stays in the saddle. PROMISING PROSPECT (3) rates similarly off the first-up Maiden win at Goulburn heavily bet. Guymer is off Dark Vador to stick. Showed plenty in his initial preparation and can secure the run of the race. The longer sprint will suit. CRITICAL TIME (4) raced a $3.50 favourite at Kembla Grange and was plain on the heavy track. The narrow defeat at Wyong first-up is the best pointer to his ability.

Race 8 1000m BM 55

Competitive. ZAZEL (10) capped the heavily bet placing with her Maiden win this track/trip two weeks ago. Came home hard to just knock off a short-priced Snowden-trained favourite. Needs the speed on but he represents the premier local barn and looks capable of repeating. RIVA D'AMOR (5) was beaten a whisker at Nowra first-up and then settled last at Wyong and was never in the picture (vet clear). He has plenty up the sleeve and the in-form Collett stays aboard. Fitter and is a player. SPIRITS BURN DEEP (6) resumed in the same Nowra contest and was just pipped from the front. She's improved and Owen is a positive replacement for Martin who sticks with ZAZEL. TIMPERLEY (3) resumes and can perform fresh. Has had two trial warmers and keep onside.
