Randwick Guineas
Australia | FEATURE RACE GUIDE
History
The Randwick Guineas is a Group 1 race over 1600m for three-year-olds at Randwick conducted by the Australian Turf Club.
The Randwick Guineas is run under Set Weights conditions.
Previously run as the Canterbury Guineas over 1900m, it's been a good horse's race since the revamp and step back to the mile.
The race was run at Warwick Farm in 2011 and 2013. It is the first peg of the Triple Crown but being at the mile becomes an important race in its own right.
Since the Randwick Guineas became a mile race, only Dundeel has won the 3yo Triple Crown.
In the last 35 runnings (Rand/Cant/WF), fillies have only won 3 times and only once over the mile. That was Mosheen in 2012.
There have been 16 Randwick (Canterbury) Guineas winners go on to win the Rosehill Guineas.
There have been 13 Randwick (Canterbury) Guineas winners go on to win the ATC Australian Derby.
Only two Derby winners, Shoot Out and Dundeel, won the Randwick Guineas at the mile.
Weekend Hussler did the Caulfield Guineas/Randwick (Canterbury) Guineas double in 2007/08. The previous horse to do it was Beechcraft in 1983/84. The Autumn Sun emulated those feats in 2018/19.
Weekend Hussler and Mentality have used Open Age races as lead ups to win at Randwick.
Shadow Hero won the 2020 edition making it two G1s from two Randwick starts (Spring Champion the other).
Zac Purton came home from Hong Kong for a quick mission and won a G1 double including Communist in 2023.
Les Bridge at 85 became one of the oldest trainers to ever win a G1 as Celestial Legend scored in a great running (Bart Cummings was 87 when he won this race with grandson James).
The 2024 Randwick Guineas was worth $1,000,000 in prizemoney.
When you include the old Canterbury Guineas, the notable winners are Delta (1949), Todman (1957), Martello Towers (1959), Imagele (1973), Veandercross (1992), Octagonal (1996), Intergaze (1997), Fairway (2000), Universal Prince (2001), Weekend Hussler (2008), Shoot Out (2010), Dundeel (2013), Dissident (2014), Le Romain (2016), The Autumn Sun (2019) and Celestial Legend (2023).
The 2024 Randwick Guineas was won by Celestial Legend from Militarize and Café Millenium.
