The 2016 Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Scales Of Justice, recent winner here of the Hyperion Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) was facing his first test at 2000m here which was made more challenging by the Soft 7 conditions. He began well and went to the front, setting a moderate tempo. He ran along from the 700m, turned for home with a good break, was gradually being overhauled nearing the post but held on gamely to score a narrow win. Zarantz raced in sixth place, one off the rails, improved from the 700m and went into second place at the home turn. He then kept running on resolutely getting to within a half head of the winner at the post in a really solid effort. Pounamu was back in eighth place, tracked up from the 600m going to fifth (out wide) at the home turn. He then kept battling on well, getting up in time to take the minor placing in a sound staying effort.
