Polanski went straight to the lead and was allowed to set a moderate pace (first 1000m 61.88) before quickening and getting a nice break at the 600m. However he had to dig deep when challenged at the 200m before drawing away to win nicely by a length and a quarter. Celeritas was second to the home turn, challenged gamely at the 200m then kept fighting on for a good second. Eagle Island was a distant seventh before making a run at the 600m. He was still five lengths from the leader at the turn, improved fourth at the 200m then battled on for third, beaten two and three quarter lengths, being unsuited by the sprint home tactics of the race. *ANZ
