The Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner It’s A Dundeel came across smartly from his wide barrier (12) and settled outside the leader Atlantic Jewel. They then set a very steady tempo (first 1200m 1:19.42) before picking up the pace from the 600m. It’s A Dundeel challenged strongly at the 200m and gradually wore the mare down to grab a gusty short head win at the post. Atlantic Jewel was quickly away and went straight to the lead. She slowed the pace and looked the winner as she turned into the home straight but she was out-stayed in the closing stages to lose her unbeaten record by a narrow margin for a very game second. The VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Dear Demi showed surprising pace from the barrier and raced in third spot on the rails. She got an inside run at the turn, challenged at the 300m and then fought on particularly well for a very good third. Happy Trails was fourth, one out and one back, to the turn and held on very well to hold fourth. Manighar was sixth one off the rails, improved wide from 600m and then battled on nicely for a good fifth. Silent Achiever was seventh one off the rails, between runners. She fanned wide rounding the home turn and ran on in good style for sixth while the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) favourite Puissance De Lune was second last in the 14-horse field to the 800m, went very wide rounding the home turn and made good ground for seventh beaten three and three quarter lengths, losing no admirers for his Cup prospects. *ANZ
