Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt Montreal created a very good impression in winning here on debut. He was quickly away but was caught three deep (without cover), sharing the lead, before getting to the front at the 200m. He then proved too strong in the latter stages to win well, and in quick time. The Gary Portelli-trained filly Improvement raced in the centre of a trio of leaders, briefly got to the front on straightening, was headed at the 200m and then battled on well for a good second in a promising effort on debut.
