The race was run at a moderate early pace with Ollie’s Gold enjoying a good run in third place on the rails. Nearing the home turn the leader (Endzone) drifted off the rails and Ollie’s Gold drove through to take the lead. He then kept fighting back strongly, holding on to win by a length at the post. Keep The Cash raced outside the leader and got to a narrow lead at the home bend but couldn’t match the winner in the straight, battling on for a sound second. The Peter Moody-trained Strive To Excel raced in fifth place on the rails before switching between runners at the 600m. He was held up briefly on the home turn but had clear running from the 100m and kept plugging on quite well to take third. The favourite Kenjorwood was eighth on the rails to the 600m but got a nice trail up from that point, moving up wide at the turn and plugging on fairly well in the straight for fourth. The Robert Smerdon-trained Drunken Poet travelled well in sixth spot one off the rails to the 600m. Glen Boss moved him up three wide at the 400m to be in a challenging position at the turn. But he tired a bit over the closing stages, after having every chance, to finish fifth (beaten three lengths).
