The Shadwell Australia-raced filly Wawail maintained her unbeaten record, after scoring on debut in 2YO Fillies (1000m) at Caulfield last December, with a bold first-up win here. She did not show much early pace and settled back in eighth place before improving (wide) nearing the home turn. She then sprinted quickly, getting up in time to score by a short head, putting up a smart performance. Devon Princess was fourth between runners, got into the clear on turning for home, hit the lead at the 100m and fought gamely for a close second. Roll The Ignition raced outside the leader, went to the front on straightening and held on for third while the favourite Kungsleden worked to retain the lead and tired from the 100m to finish (3.8 lengths) sixth.
