The Anthony Cummings-prepared three-year-old Alpha Beat ($2.30 fav) won nicely here, following his debut fifth at Mornington on 29 December. He was eased from his barrier (7) and settled in sixth place one off the rails, following a good tempo. He was giving the leader about six lengths before improving (wide) on passing the 600m. He fanned deep at the home turn, put in a good run to take the lead at the 200m and then drew clear to score comfortably by almost two lengths in good time (1:09.69). It was a good win and he looks likely to continue to progress. Debut runner Stone Dweller was last in the eight horse field to the 600m and ran on in encouraging fashion, without troubling the winner, to grab second at the post. He clearly has potential. *ANZ
