The $19 chance to Alma’s Fury won here in gloomy conditions with the race being run in heavy rain. He raced in about seventh place, without cover possibly in better going, before joining the leading pair of Laser Hawk and Tougher Than Ever nearing the home turn. He kept fighting on strongly, still in the centre of the track, to win by a long neck at the post. The threeyear- old Tougher Than Ever raced outside the leader, Laser Hawk, before taking the lead at the 200m. He looked the winner at that stage, and was only caught nearing the post. Danleigh was last in the 13-horse field to the 600m. He stuck to the rails and got a great run and almost hit the lead mid-stretch before fighting on for a close third. Outsider Willy Jimmy surprised running on for fourth with the stayer Kelinni, who was handy on the rails, holding on for fifth. Gatewood raced wide and put in a nice first-up run to finish sixth beaten just over seven lengths. While Laser Hawk (seventh), Albert The Fat (eighth) and Glencadam Gold (ninth) all appeared to fail due to the very heavy conditions. *ANZ
