Wordplay, a half sister to last year’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Fiveandahalfstar (Hotel Grand), followed a good debut second at this track on 14 August with a narrow but very good win here. She was eased from her wide barrier (13) and settled past midfield and wide. She was giving the leader about eight lengths at the 600m, moved up very wide rounding the home turn and put in a quick run going to take the lead passing the 100m and she did well to hold off the late closing runner-up who seemed to catch her by surprise. She appears suited to further and looks the makings of a good class filly. Define did not show much early dash and settled third last in the 15-horse field. She was still well back on straightening, switched to the rails at the 200m and then finished fast to just miss in a photo for a promising second on debut. Her stablemate Canossa, also having her first run, led to the home turn, dashed clear on straightening but was headed passing the 100m and she then held on fairly well for third. *ANZ
