The David Payne-trained two-year-old gelding Colesberg scored a surprise $26 win, racing on debut, but it was a smart win, nevertheless. He was last in the six-horse field in the early stages, improved (wide with cover) from the 600m, put in a run (in the centre of the track) from the 200m and finished too well to score quite impressively. The $1.50 favourite Single Bullet raced outside the leader (Radiant Choice), looked the winner when he got to the front at the 200m but he could not hold off the late-closing winner to take second after seeming to have every chance. Callmetrouble raced in fourth place, was in a challenging position at the 200m and then held on to take the minor placing.
