Ambitious Champion soon improved in the early stages and the settled well outside the leader (Basic Trilogy). They then steadied the tempo before lifting the pace on passing the 800m. He easily went to the front on turning for home and then sprinted clear before holding on strongly for a good win. Anticipation had a nice trip in fifth place on the rails from his good barrier (2), before getting between runners approaching the 200m. He challenged at the 100m and fought well in the sprint home for a very good second. Giovanni Canaletto settled at the tail of the nine horse field, travelling comfortably behind a moderate pace. He made a quick (wide) move from the 600m, put in a good run from the 300m and then fought on well to take the minor placing.
