Southland Guineas (LR)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

The track was off Dead6 and the times very ordinary all day with the rail out 4m from the 1300m to the 700m not helping on an already tight and turning rhomboidal track. This Listed 3yo mile was missing the dominant twice prior North Island filly in Excelleration so no surprise then that the runner up too her last start in Global Thinking bolted in today. She too is a North Island trained filly and the only Australian bred in the race settled down last then improved deep across the top before striding up second turning for home. Global Thinking led at the 200m and powered away to score by over two lengths and clock 1:41.70, which is not a very good time however in comparison to today was quite okay. It was just under second inferior (five and a half to six lengths) to the Ratings85 held prior of older horses and was almost a length better than the Ratings 65 for older horses in the final even of the day. Today was the third win in eleven starts for Global Thinking and her first black type win with it displaying just how superior Excelleration is in the South Island at the moment, The Sparkle was more like it in running second after sitting outside the leader while Courte Zarindi ran home strongly for third from the rear duo and being held up near the home turn. Thom Brown ran another decent race at black type level when fourth after coming wide from the back across the top. Major Is Choux fought on okay for fifth while Kiwi Ida disappointed and she may be just a sprinter. Irish Express covered an excessive amount of ground throughout so to not drop right out and only be beaten five lengths was not too bad. Anythingcouldhappen was outclassed and The Lustre was dreadful after leading up and she seems to have trained right off. She ran third in the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) last November and with the New Zealand 3yo form very suspect this season both male and female, she just added more proof. Her stablemate The Sparkle ran fourth in that race (a nose behind The Lustre) and today was second in this far inferior event and was seven and a half lengths ahead to make a mockery of the form. All season so far the New Zealand 3yo’s are having turns and nothing is able to dominate, so the bunch is not covered by too far in actual ability terms and therefore as a group is below standard. Group and Listed winners are getting beaten out of the money the next time they run all too often this season and since so many are that close in ability where they can have turns to win then it stands to reason that so many cannot be that good as a group. It is very rare to get three or four top liners of this age a season so to accept a dozen or so having turns are all top shelf is a ludicrous concept on face value and an absurdity of utter impossibility after a spit second of deep thought and analysis. The two superior 3yo winners in the South island for the last three Listed events have been two North Island fillies that never ran in the G1 1000 Guineas as not going well enough to do so and both just sprinters at the time tellingly. This was not a very strong field at all and the winner would beat these every time at the moment unless Excelleration appears again but then the quinella does look a lock.
