A last-start winner over 3200m, Jacksstar began fairly from barrier seven and rider Alysha Collett immediately eased and the pair switched towards the inner to be one off the fence, back of midfield passing the post with a round to run. Starting the back straight Collett had had enough of the muddling pace and sent Jacksstar up and around the field and at the 1000m they sat third, travelling so well that by the 800m were almost alongside the pacemaker. Into the home straight they took over (narrowly) and Collett asked for more and he ground his way to the line in a gutsy staying effort, holding on by a head. Balham set the not particularly fast pace from the outset, had to speed up a little when challenged at the 600m, was passed by the winner at the top of the straight but fought hard all the way to the line. Five To Midnight was well back starting the big bend, got away from the fence approaching the last corner, had plenty of room to challenge but did not really get going until the race was over. Sampson moved up to third before they straightened, looked to challenge but could only battle to the wire for fourth.
