The Listed 3yo filly event over 1400m went to a rapidly improving No More Tears on a sluggish slow Ellerslie track. She sat outside the leader and then challenged across the top in a sedate run race before taking the front at the 300m. As she should the filly kicked too well to score and clocked 1:27.79, which was substantially the slowest time at this trip all day. It was her second win in three starts and notably she has only contested to date stakes races with her defeat being a fourth beaten a length at G3. High Class ran a brave second after being handy wide and then moving into second at the 200m and clearly enjoyed the wet ground. The hot favourite Secret Spirit going for five stakes wins in a row could only finish third beaten just over two lengths. She never looked a win chance on settling fifth or sixth the inner before running on into third at the 100m. Secret Spirit had won four stakes races in a row on heavy footing so the slow ground may have been an issue, which does not augur well for if she strikes improved footing. Untamed Diamond soon led and was run over into fourth but did not really get forced into running time. Duchess Kate ran on okay late after losing her place and being further back in a tepid run race than likely wanted by her rider. Tatters was midfield and wide and fought on well as the slow time overall clearly helped her cause. The depth in this race was not great at all and the footing sludgy plus the time was diabolical so No More Tears in effect had a soft Listed win and will likely tackle a G1 mile at her next outing. High Class and Secret Spirit especially look like wet trackers only while the efforts of Duchess Kate and Tatters suggest they will pay their way in age group races.
