This juvenile 1400 event at Listed level was held on an Ellerslie bog where a vast width of the track closer in was a total no go zone. Ichiban just held on to win after being on the pace then taking the lead across the top before being steered widest the run home. The gelding won by a nose in 1:29.21 and has now won two of three outings and was placed in the other start. The time was the second best on the day of three 1400m races held. Runner up Quantum settled back and wide but really unwound well up the middle of the home straight and just missed. Church Road, a maiden, was beaten a nose and a neck and did so after being back on the inner and improving across the top. He reached fourth turning for home and nabbed third on the post to deny Hello M’Lady that blacktype placing. Hello M’Lady was second the outer then fourth across the top before being sixth and flat turning for home only to get her second wind and reach third at the 200m. Being a filly the Listed placing would have been worth more too her but she lost third by a nostril flare. Pincanto was running on distantly for fifth and Jackson Road plugged closer too. The rest were struggling a long way out in the testing footing so excuses can be made and acceptable. However the depth of this field was poor at this juncture and the Listed status of this race is likely on a warning or worse with just three of the eleven runners today having won a race.
