Eclipse Stakes (G3)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This G3 juvenile 1200m saw a powerfully built filly remain unbeaten and show she is indeed the real deal on a track that was still dry but very motley-looking at this stage thought that would change dramatically after one more race. Melt settled fourth the outer poised in the running going along effortlessly and then was moved into an ominous third turning for home. She was still third at the 200m seemingly not able to pick up the two leaders then like good horses do, changed gears at the 100m and blew on by the pair at the 50m to win by just under a length in 1:09.31. Melt is now undefeated on raceday (G3 and Listed winner) and at the trials and looks now on a path towards the only two G1 races for juveniles in New Zealand held in the Autumn over 1200m at Ellerslie and 1400m at Awapuni. Bit Lippy a maiden was slow out and last away but ran home hard to get second and the gelding has now paid a dividend in every start and they have come at in order Listed, G2 and G3 level. She’s A Thief led up and had on her outside the colt Al Hasa and this pair were about a neck apart and keeping each other company throughout and in fact were still slugging it out with just a 100m to go. The filly She’s A Thief ended up third and just a head in front of Al Hasa at the line and they will likely see each other again this season more than once. There was a big gap back to the unbeaten visitor Sir Nate that ran on closer in the run home and at least gained some clockwise experience for when he returns to contend the Karaka Millions. Luvnlucy was outclassed but will win a maiden juvenile event this season somewhere. Beastmode trailed the leaders and stopped badly so his Karaka Millions hopes are in tatters and he clearly did not back up so soon from being a good thing beaten third here prior when settled down too far away. He was a nostril from runner up prior to today and then would not have not needed to run here so a rider misjudgment or error (they are the same) has likely sent this colt into having a break and/or spell and certainly back to a drawing board approach. Melt is not Karaka Millions eligible so can have her campaign spaced to target both G1 events in the Autumn and she could be facing some with a pressure cooker run out of the Karaka Millions, so has yet another advantage. She looks the real deal and could run 1400m now in fact. Bit Lippy is the best maiden juvenile in New Zealand at the moment with three runs for three placings and all have come at blacktype. He too is not Karaka Millions eligible so no need to rush him from now on. She’s A Third and Al Hasa are both Karaka Millions and that noise you can hear from the two stables of these and other yards is because Melt will not be there. Sir Nate will need to find several lengths and his unbeaten form prior now has a query over it but this yard can do it and especially when it comes to the Karaka Millions.
